Fixing Shortcuts Blocked by macOS Secure Input
If NeverType displays a warning banner stating that an application is blocking your dictation shortcut, macOS has entered Secure Event Input mode. Here is what is happening and how to fix it in seconds.
Quick Fix in 3 Seconds
Check the app name displayed in NeverType’s warning banner (such as 1Password, Bitwarden, Terminal, or Chrome). Click away from any password input fields, dismiss unlock modals, or quit that app. NeverType will immediately re-enable your shortcut.
What is macOS Secure Input?
macOS includes a built-in security feature called IsSecureEventInputEnabled(). When an application asks you to type a password, credit card number, or security credential, macOS isolates your keyboard from all background applications.
While Secure Input is active:
- Background keyboard listeners are muted: macOS drops global key-down and key-up events before background apps can receive them. This prevents malicious keyloggers from capturing passwords.
- Global hotkeys stop triggering: Any hotkey containing regular keys (like ⌥ Option + Space or ⌘ Cmd + Shift + Space) will not be passed to NeverType by macOS.
- Recording new shortcuts is suspended: NeverType pauses shortcut remapping in Settings so invalid or incomplete key recordings aren't captured.
Common Causes & Step-by-Step Fixes
In 99% of cases, one of the following four applications is holding Secure Input open in the background:
1Password, Bitwarden, KeePassXC
Most frequent causeIf an unlock prompt, quick-access bar, or autofill popup was left open or minimized, the password manager holds Secure Input continuously active.
Unlock or close the password prompt with Esc. If it stays locked, quit and re-open the password manager.
Terminal or iTerm2
Secure Keyboard EntrymacOS Terminal has an optional setting called Secure Keyboard Entry that locks the keyboard while Terminal is running.
Click Terminal (or iTerm2) in your top Mac menu bar, and uncheck Secure Keyboard Entry.
Google Chrome, Arc, Brave, Safari
Password input focusWhen typing inside a password input field or browser extension sign-in window, browsers enable Secure Input until focus changes.
Click anywhere outside the password field, switch to a different tab, or close the sign-in modal.
macOS LoginWindow & Touch ID
System authorization promptA Touch ID dialog, administrator authorization prompt, or lock screen can occasionally fail to clean up its security token.
Lock your screen with ⌘ Cmd + ⌃ Ctrl + Q and log back in, or restart your Mac.
Identify the Exact Blocking Process via Terminal
If NeverType does not name the culprit process, you can inspect macOS’s internal I/O Kit registry directly. Open your Mac’s Terminal app and run this diagnostic command:
ioreg -l -w 0 | grep -i SecureInputIf the output contains kCGSSessionSecureInputPID = 1234, you can see which app corresponds to that number by running:
